Denzil Bath was brought up in his father’s photographic business in an age when hand processed black and white photography was the norm. Having studied photography at Plymouth College of Art and Design and gaining a college diploma at BA degree level. Denzil worked in an advertising agency before travelling abroad as a photographer, finally working as a chief photographer in Monte Carlo before returning to the family business in North Devon.

Denzil’s work has been exhibited in several national finals, shown on television and at the National Exhibition Centre. As one of the first exponents of digital photography in Devon, Denzil has given various talks on digital photography. He has recently been awarded Qualified Teacher Status and is currently the lead tutor in Digital Photography with Devon Adult and Community Learning. Denzil’s interest in the history of photography, which he has also taught at Petroc College, has lead, him to specialise in producing Wet Plate Collodion photographs.

Denzil derives a deep satisfaction from using some of these traditional darkroom skills as used in the Wet Plate Collodion alternative photographic process. As this is such an intricate process, it naturally follows that even greater forethought should be given to the subject and content of the envisaged photograph at the stage of conception. Due to the fact that every image has its own technical challenges great care and attention has to be given throughout the whole photographic process. Denzil specialising in portraiture meets these challenges with which great enthusiasm and passion, considering every image to be a unique handcrafted object d’art, showing depth and meaning. Each photographic session, for which the sitter is very much involved at every stage of the process, results in unique images revealing the poignant qualities of every sitter.
